Untitled/ Unfinished Novel. Part 1

This is the untitled and unfinished novel I've been working on for the past few years. I've written more of it, but didn't want to make the post a mile long.

Untitled/ Unfinished Novel

My two passions in life:

Motorcycles and Racing

So, I decided to move to Orland, Florida and go to Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI) to learn how to work on bikes.
After a few months, I got a job, one that I hated with a passion…sales. After a while, I was going crazy, I had to find something else….anything else. Since I was going to school at night I had to find something that didn’t require me to get up early, I hate getting up early.
Friday night I was on my way home from school, I take a kick-ass road called Trade Port every night. It’s mostly curves within a 2-3 mile span with minimal lights; of course, I’m always speeding down it. The speed limit is 30 or 40 but I’m not really sure, I’ve raced and won a dozen or so races down this road. I’m good but it’s mostly because I’m crazy. I drive a Nissan Sentra, which isn’t the fastest car out there. It has decent bottom end and torque but it’s no Vette.
Anyway, like I was saying, I was coming home from school Friday night doing about 70 and weaving in and out of the little traffic that there was, when out of nowhere this person in a black Mazda 3 is up my ass.
I speed up, he speeds up, neck and neck thru the curves back and forth in the lead, I start to wonder, how is this possible? I’m good but his car can blow mine out of the water. I knew the light was coming up around the bend, I down shift and take off. As I sit waiting at the light, he comes rolling up and asks me to pull into the 7-Eleven across the street. I can’t explain it, but something told me to do it.

Getting out of my car he looked at me and said, “Damn you’re good”

“Thanks” I said.

“I’m Jack,” He said holding out his hand.

Shaking his hand, I said, “I’m Tayla, but you can call me Tay.”

Jack was about 6’3” with dark brown spiked hair and brown eyes.

“So why did you ask me to pull in here?” I asked him

“I’m impressed. One that you can take those corners so fast and two that you can do it in that car”. Also, if you pass the test, I want to offer you a job.”

“Um, Thanks”. Feeling just a little confused, but I wanted to know more.

“A job” I said “well I don’t know about that. I go to school at night and….”

“Yes a job, I know but don’t worry about school. Where do you go anyway?”

“MMI, it’s Moto-“

“Motorcycle Mechanics Institute, I know, one of my boys goes there too.” He said.

“Ok, so explain”

“Alright, I work for Mazda; well actually they’re my sponsor. Have you ever heard of the U.S.R.A.?”

“Yeah, a little bit. That’s the legal street racing league.”

“Actually, it’s the US Racing Association. So yeah, it’s basically the legal street racing association. At least that’s what everyone knows it by.”

“There are about 15 teams in the States and my team, The Dragons, is 100% sponsored by Mazda. We’re ranked in the top 5 and we are looking for a new member.”

Ok so now I am really confused. “And you want me!?! Why?”

“Well let me explain.” He began.

“There are four to six members to every team. We have three right now. There are four types of races. Type one is drag Racing. Type two is basically NASCAR, you go in a circle and there is a point system. Type three is the barrel race. Last, but not least, Type four is what we call the Twisty. It’s a lot like Trade Port but longer and with more corners.”

“Right now, my boy Chris is doing the Twisties and Drag Racing, which is hard. He’s the best we’ve got, and that’s where you come in.”

“So, you want me to race the Twisties?” This was turning out to be a good day.

“Exactly, I’ll write down the directions to the track. Can you meet me there say… tomorrow around 11 am?”

“Yeah that sounds good but I have some questions about this….”

“Yeah I figured but first things first, you gotta pass the test. Although, I’m pretty sure you will. After that we’ll go over everything, sound good?” he asked giving me the directions.

“Sure, I can live with that.”

“Sweet, my cell number is on there in case you get lost,” he said smiling “I’ll see ya tomorrow Tay.”

“Definitely”

Getting back into my car, I just couldn’t believe this was real. Tomorrow’s gonna be very interesting. I clutched that piece of paper all the way home.

****************************************

The next day I met Jack and the rest of his team at their track by I-4.

“Hey” Jack said as I was getting out of my car.

“Hey” I replied.

“You ready for the test?” he asked.

“Yeah, but I got one question, what kind of test is this exactly?”

“Well remember I was telling you about my boy Chris?

“Yeah” I said nodding “He’s the one who races both the Drag race and the Twisty”

Smiling he said, “Yeah, you’ll be racing him. If you win you get the job, are you up for it?”

Trying to hold back my excitement, I said, “Of course I am. When do we start?”

“Right now”

We walked up to the entrance of the track and Jack opened the door for me. As I walked in, I noticed that the room was huge, with a big screen T.V. on the wall to left, with leather chairs and a couch in front of it. To the right was a Safire blue velvet pool table and four bar stools around it.

Jack led me forward to where the elevator was and hit the up button.

“What is this room?” I asked as we waited

“This is our relaxing room when we need a break from everything. You know how baseball players have a clubhouse?”

“Yeah” I answered, looking confused

“Well this is our clubhouse and compared to theirs, ours is the Ritz.” He said laughing as the elevator door opened. We stepped in and he hit the button for the third floor.

“Damn, how big is this place?”

“Big” he answered, “When you get the job I’ll give you the grand tour”

“Cool” I said, as the elevator doors opened

We walked into what looked like a conference room. It had a huge table with fifteen chairs around it and four guys were already sitting at it. I’m starting to get a little nervous at this point and I start to think, what have I gotten myself into?

As we got a bit closer, everyone stood up.

“Hey Jack, What’s up?” one of the guys said. He was about 5’9” with dark brown hair and green eyes.

“So where is this new guy you were telling us about?” another one asked, he had to be 6’ tall with dirty blonde hair underneath a Fox hat and grey eyes.

“You mean girl, and I know I told you she was a girl. She’s standing right next to me.” Jack told him. “Don’t be an ass Chris.”

“I thought you were joking, dude. A girl? Really?” he asked skeptically.

I looked back at Jack and said, “Wow, he’s an observant one isn’t he? What gave me away, the long hair or my boobs?”

Everyone but Chris busted out laughing.

“What, are you saying I’m stupid?” Chris asked.

“No, I’m saying it’s the 21st century, women can do anything men can do. And usually we do it better.” I said and smirked.

“Well, why don’t you put your skills where your mouth is and get this interview over with so I can prove you wrong.” He told me.

I looked at him over my glasses and said, “Well lets go big shot, I can’t wait to see you lose your second job.”

“Ok, ok, before we start that, can I at least introduce you to everyone?” Jack asked.

I looked up and smiled, “Yeah, sure, go for it.”

Jack just shook his head, “Ok, this ass to my right, as you’ve figured out is Chris. That (He pointed to the guy with brown hair and green eyes.) is Matt, he does the NASCAR type race. The guy to his left is Mac, (Mac looked to be about 5’7” with blonde hair and blue eyes.) he’s our manager. And well… James apparently didn’t feel like showing up today. Guys, this is Tay.”

“Hey, how’s it goin?” Matt asked.

“Hey, pretty good. Thanks.” I replied.

“Nice to meet you.” Mac said

“Ditto” I told him.

“Oh, Jack, by the way, James said he had an appointment and will be by later.” Mac informed him.

“So, when can we get this over with so we can start looking for a new member for real?” Chris asked.

Jack rolled his eyes and sighed, “Well let’s start now,” he looked at me and asked, “You ready?”

“As ready as I’ll ever be. One question though, what am I racing?” I asked him

“A car, duh.” Chris answered.

“Oh, wow really? I thought we were racing go karts.” I said sarcastilly, “No shit, I meant, am I using my car? Cause then it’s not quite fair, since my car isn’t up to par with yours.”

Jack shot Chris a look before he could open his mouth, “No you’ll be using my car. It’s exactly the same as his. This way it’ll be 100% fair. That work?”

“Yeah, sure.” I told him.

“Ok, lets get to it then!” Mac said enthusiastically.
